bleaver
Looking for opinions on the preferred length of the backstay sections for use with an angled step? Is it better to replace backstay, shorten leg sections or upper section?
cdoyle
Cut off the bottom fitting on the upper section. Replace with a big eye swage or a smaller eye swage with a shackle, and then use spectra line to attach the top section to the two legs. This makes it easy for a tall person to adjust (shorter folks can use the leg turnbuckles) and to remove the backstay for lauching and retrieving the boat.I would guess that if you shortened the upper portion by 6", that would be plenty. bleaver
Would cutting the lower sections work as well? Seems it may be easier to cut the lower sections with rig up to bring for shortening. Do you have an estimate of the suggested length for these sections ( mine are approx 24’3” for the upper and lowers are 6'7” with turnbuckles completely closed)? cdoyle
You'll lose some adjustment if you cut the lower legs. In addition, the swaging will cost twice as much. My advice: Take the mast down, remove the backstay, and shorten the upper section.
