robertgharrison Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 Sailing on a close reach with two crew (total weight about 380 lb.), and class jib, at what wind speed would you reef your main?
robertgharrison Posted October 16, 2011 Author Report Posted October 16, 2011 Never mind. Found out today.
Bolido Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 what did you find out? Instead of reefing I use a smaller jib with full main. It works fine
robertgharrison Posted November 24, 2011 Author Report Posted November 24, 2011 With three crew (+- 575 lbs.), 18 mph gusting to 25 mph, class jib, and a full main, we were often over-powered on weather legs.
Bolido Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 I had the same problem in similar conditions. Bought a smaller jib and the boat sails better even with a full main (in 25 knot gusts still gets overpowered...) I dont know if it is class legal since we race PHFR serious fun. Can get you the dimensions if interested; bought from CD Direct. I am very happy with it.
robertgharrison Posted December 10, 2011 Author Report Posted December 10, 2011 Bolido, Thanks, but barring climate change, such conditions are pretty rare around here during the sailing season, so I don't think a smaller jib would be a good investment. I just need to reef and perhaps get another 180-200 crew. Bob
