Aluminum Channel For Hatch Cover

Recommended Posts

I was talking to another J22 buddy and he was saying some of the guys in the South have started replacing the C Teak channels that are plastic I assume with something more durable like aluminum.

Have any of you done this yet and do you have any advice?

Mike the aluminum ones can get bent and become dangerous in rough seas. I know it happened to me, somehow we snapped it with the spinnaker on hoist and it bent up, snapped off and left a sharp jagged edge sticking up from the hatch area about 5 inches in length. It was rough and we ended up trying to bend it back to no avail and taped the shit out of it. Next weekend i replaced it with the plastic ones which will just snap off in that case.

I have the Aluminum; bought at Home Depot. It is smaller than the plastic and the hatch is not as good of a fit. As you slide it, it creates black alum dust. Wish I had replaced with the plastic....it on my list of TTD.
