  1. Hello Uncledog -

I have an older boat (1983), when I replaced the backstay after I bought the boat the first couple of backstays I got were too short.  APS started asking you to measure your backstay to make sure it would fit.  There is also an option to replace the "solid" backstay with a piece of spectra between the stay and the legs.

I've never used it, but maybe someone else will chime in.

  2. The cabin-top (over the slider for the companionway) is an independent piece.  It can be unscrewed from the boat, and worked on independently.  Mine suffered from water intrusion from the various cleats and turning blocks on the cabin top.  Once off, you can remove the slider rails and cover if you wish.  My tracks were brittle, so I replaced them when I rebuilt the cabin top.  Note:  You need to keep an eye on any build up on the cabin top from the repairs.  Otherwise the hardware from the cleats, etc. will interfere with the slider.

  3. From the J/22 Class Association Constitution:

4.2 – The Hull Numbers shall mean the Builder’s Code letters, the Hull Number allocated by J-Boats, Inc., on a consecutive basis world wide, and the Date of Molding onto the transom.
    Example: TSP20949C989
    Tillotson Pearson J/22 949 September 1989

So I would bet that the boat in question is hull #4 built in January 1983.
