My main halyard needs to be replaced. It is the «wire to rope» type. Does it has to replace it by the same thing? and if not, do I have to replace the masthead sheave?

You can replace it with any synthetic rope not less than 8mm (about 5/16") in diameter. But, you want to get a line that won't stretch. My advice is to go for something with a high-tech core and a polyester (i.e. dacron) cover. They probably have recommendations for a J/22 halyard on the Layline website, and for sure they have recommendations on the APS website.
You won't need to replace the sheave, but since you'll be working in the area, it would not be a bad idea to lubricate the sheave. |
